The 10th District Court of Appeals denied a South Columbus man's motion seeking an order from the court certifying an interdistrict conflict as it related to his not guilty plea by reason of insanity after having been indicted on felony count of non-support of dependents. A decision out of the 10th District Court of Appeals last week upholds Ohio's Smoke Free Act requiring Zeno's of the Victorian Village neighborhood of Columbus to abide by the smoking ban. The ruling supports the case against Zeno's filed by Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray and Ohio Department of Health (ODH) Director Alvin D. Jackson M.D. in August 2009. Cordray and Commerce welcome action on alcoholic energy drinks

U.S. FDA letters effectively restrict drinks; Commerce also reaches voluntary ban on distribution

Two new developments last week at the state and federal levels promise to help eliminate the availability and use of dangerous alcoholic energy drinks (AEDs) in Ohio. Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray and the Ohio Department of Commerce, Division of Liquor Control joined together in announcing both an action by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that will effectively restrict the distribution of drinks such as brands Four Loko and Joose nationwide, as well as an agreement reached by the Division of Liquor Control with the manufacturer and supplier of these drinks to stop distribution of these products in Ohio. Attorney Services Fund shows nearly $16 million in income and revenue


At the end of the fiscal year, the Supreme Court of Ohio's Attorney Services Fund reported income and revenue in excess of $15.7 million with a little less than half having been spent on disciplinary expenses, funding for the Client's Security Fund and administration of the court's Attorney Services Division. Quincy, Mass. Thanksgiving remains the leading day for cooking fires, with three times as many cooking fires as an average day. Thats according to statistics by the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), which also found that cooking equipment fires are still the leading cause of U.S. home fires and fire injuries, and the third leading cause of fire deaths. Fish and Wildlife Service seeks proposals from states for FY 2011 endangered species grants


The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) is seeking proposals from states and U.S. territories interested in obtaining federal financial assistance to acquire land or conduct planning efforts for endangered species conservation. For fiscal year (FY) 2011, the Presidents budget request for the Cooperative Endangered Species Conservation Fund includes approximately $85 million in grant funding for conservation planning activities and habitat acquisition benefitting federally protected species. Proposals must be submitted to the appropriate Service regional offices by January 18, 2011.
