According to the Consumer Reports National Research Center you can boost home energy efficiency by making the following 7 changes:
1. Purchase and use energy efficient light bulbs (81%)

4. Install energy-efficient windows and doors (29%), 5. Install insulation (24%)
5. Upgrade to an energy-efficient heating or cooling system (23%)
6. Purchase a high-efficiency water heater (21%) and
7. Install a renewable energy system - solar panels or a wind turbine (3%)

They recommend adjusting your programmable thermostat for your heating and cooling equipment 5 to10 degrees at night and when you are not at home to save up to 20% on your home energy bill - an approximate savings of $200 annually. They also recommend paying a "qualified heating and cooling pro" to seal and insulate heating and cooling ducts, especially in unconditioned spaces. This could result in an annual savings of $400.
