Staff Sgt. Samuel E. Hewitt, USMC Remains Found After 44 Years
After Missing in Action on March 22, 1966 and being declared dead on December 1, 1975, the remains of Staff Sgt. Samuel E. Hewitt were found on Sept. 20, 2010. The remains were identified by dental records at the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command in Hawaii. The family was notified on Oct. 5, 2010.
Samuel Hewitt went in to the Marine Corp in June of 1965. After basic training in Camp Pendleton near San Diego, CA, where he earned an expert marksman medal, Hewitt received jungle training in Okinawa. He was sent to Viet Nam in Dec. of 1966 and was stationed south of Da Nang near the de-militarized zone. Hewitt was serving with U.S. Marines, Company I, 3rd Battalion 9th Marine Regiment. His duties included night patrol on an expeditionary scouting position. On March 22, 1966 he was sent on night patrol and never returned.
Samuel Hewitt was born in Indianapolis, IN June, 1945 and grew up in Koontz Lake, IN. He graduated from Oregon-Davis High School in 1965 where he lettered in sports, and sang in the choir. He wanted to go into the service before starting a career as a construction engineer. He was very proud to be a member of the Marine Corp. Hewitt also sang in the choir while in training at Okinawa. During the Christmas season of 1966 he and other choir members volunteered to sing at six different hospitals and nursing home in Okinawa
The small community of Koontz Lake, IN is honoring Sams return at the Oregon-Davis High School Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11, 2010. We appreciate all the kind words and memories friends and classmates have of Sam. reports his sister, Paula Banks. He will be remembered as a happy-go-lucky young man, who was kind to people and is mischievous smile and sense of humor.
Weve waited all these years, said Sams mother, Marie Fromherz, but Im grateful to have this resolved during my lifetime.
Hewitt is survived by his mother, Hilda Marie Fromherz, (George) and sister, Paula (Mrs. James) Banks of Medina, OH. He has two nephews, David Banks (Jessica) of Huntington Beach, CA and Alex Banks (Meagan) of Cleveland, OH and a niece Elizabeth Beth (Jeffrey) Stover of Olmsted Fall, OH.
There will be a memorial service on Friday, Nov. 19, 2010 at 10:30 am at Waite & Sons Funeral Homes, Medina chapel, 756 N. Court St, Medina, OH and burial with full military honors at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, OH, will follow the service. The family will receive friends on Thursday, Nov. 18 from 5 7 pm at the funeral home.
