Traditional martial arts systems originated in Korea around two thousand years ago as a weaponless defense often used by natives for survival against wild animals. Through the years, the practice developed into an art, not only for use as self-defense, but also as a sport, a means of regular physical exercise and a philosophy by which one could spiritually enrich one's life.
Traditional techniques and philosophy are still taught as they were in ancient times. Martial arts offer the excitement of competition, the blessing of good health through regular exercise, and once mastered, remains a silent weapon with which one may defend his life if necessary, or the life of a helpless person. The goal of traditional martial arts is not to promote violence.
We learn traditional martial arts in order to build our bodies and our minds, to grow stronger in love for our country, and stronger for our belief in justice and righteousness.
We do not have to prove to people how strong we are. Our goal is to continue to become more powerful, and when we become strong, we should live humbly, directing our power toward the weak. To become a champion of justice, our spirit must be indomitable and we must never forget, no matter how good or bad we are that only hard work will be the key to our success.
QUALITY TIME AND FAMILY UNITY
One of Kim’s College of Martial Arts greatest benefits is its ability to foster family unity. Many if not most of the activities available to children, especially sports, are organized around age or gender. This often separates children from their siblings. Even worse, parents roles are defined as just spectators in their children’s experience. Parents often find themselves crisscrossing around town to “see” their individual children participate in an activity. Kim’s FITNESS WITH PURPOSE program provides them a meaningful activity they can do together.
LEAD BY EXAMPLE
Kim’s provides the environment for parents to let their actions lead their children a very visible way. A parents values such as respect, self– control, self-discipline and determination can all be observed by the child. The parents can also observe their children. 70% of Kim’s students have at least one other family member participating as a student. All family members also receive a special family rate on tuition.
FAMILY THAT KICKS TOGETHER
Kim’s College of Martial Arts provides a great atmosphere for students to develop “CAHRACTER FITNESS”. Our special blend of traditional martial arts and state of the art teaching methods enhance such characteristics as respect, discipline, concentration, goal setting, confidence, and sound morals. Martial Arts training at KCMA is more than just kicking and punching. It is FITNESS WITH PURPOSE: Learning and developing success skills to be leaders in our community.
Our traditional martial arts program offers a great opportunity for students to develop the skills to succeed in life. Our goal is to create champions of life rather than in the ring. Only traditional martial arts will help students to develop respect for themselves and others. Having self-respect will deter negative influences of today’s society.
Our traditional martial arts program fosters the idea of self discipline through having the students strive for perfection through consistent practice and effort. Self-Discipline is developed through practicing good manners and upholding good morals in class and out side of class at Kim’s College of Martial Arts! We know discipline and we do discipline!
One group of activities that Dr. Patricia Quinn, M.D., a developmental pediatrician specializing in ADHD at the Pediatric Development Center in Washington D.C. promotes for nearly all ADHD kids are martial arts such as Taekwondo.
“Martial arts are all about control. You learn to control your body. The movements are smooth. There is an element of meditation (internal self - control) in Taekwondo.” In addition, she says, teachers instruct rather than coach; when the child is shown step by step how to do something, there’s little opportunity for distraction. Another benefit of martial arts comes from its use of rituals such as bowing to the instructor. Quinn says “Rituals are good for ADHD kids because they make behavior automatic.” Martial arts rituals can help teach kids with ADHD to accept, develop and use rituals in other areas of their lives.
What is the greatest gift that a parent can give a child? CONFIDENCE! Confidence to stand firm. Confidence to say “No” to peer pressure. Confidence to say “Yes” to justice. Confidence to defend one self. Confidence to set and pursue goals.
Through Kim’s special belt ranking system of setting both short term and long term goals, students are able to gain a great amount of confidence in their abilities as they climb the steps of different color belts. As one wise man said “a journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.”
Self Confidence gained through Kim’s College of Martial Arts will last a life time. Confidence is not a hobby. It is a way of life. Begin your journey of self discovery through Kim’s FITNESS WITH PURPOSE program.
