Heritage Christian School students will honor U.S. military veterans in two special ceremonies this week.
On Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 1:10 p.m., Heritage sixth graders will celebrate the birthday of the United States Marine Corps. November 10, 1775 is the official birthday, making this Wednesday the 235th birthday.
Sgt. Arteaga from the local recruiting office will visit Heritage to speak to the students. Members of the local Marine Corps League also have been invited. Students were asked to invite anyone they know (family member, church member, neighbor) who served in the Marine Corps.
The class hopes to honor these veterans by demonstrating and publicly appreciating the sacrifices made by generations who have gone before them. The coursework included studying and reporting on Marine history and tradition, learning "The Marine's Hymn," and listening to the Marine Corps' Birthday Message issued in November of 1921 by Major General Commandant John A. LeJeune. The message includes these sobering thoughts: "From the Battle of Trenton to the Argonne, Marines have won foremost honors in war, and in the long eras of tranquility at home, generation after generation of Marines have grown gray in war in both hemispheres and in every corner of the seven seas, that our country and its citizens might enjoy peace and security."
Heritage sixth grade teacher Mr. Donavon "Marty" Martin served in the Marine Reserves and was activated during Desert Storm. He said this regarding the importance of this coursework: "When the students study the history and traditions of the Marine Corps, they are studying the history of their nation. They are also learning about virtues like honor, courage, and commitment, which we want to instill in all of our students, whether or not they will choose to serve in the Armed Forces. The Marine Corps motto is 'Semper Fidelis' which means 'always faithful'...always faithful to God, to our Country, and to the Corps. The students need to be exposed to the sacrifices of men and women who still today hold to these 'old fashioned' character traits."
On Thursday, November 11 during elementary chapel, Heritage will salute our nation's veterans from all branches of the service. Chapel begins at 8:50 a.m. in the auditorium. Veterans are invited to attend.
Thank you, veterans, for your sacrifice of service.
