Tabernacle Baptist Church has its beginnings one hundred and one years ago when twelve spirit filled Christians came together under the leadership of the Rev. A. S. Lomax and began meeting from house to house for the purpose of prayer , fellowship and praise to God. Shortly thereafter, the Rev. W.R. Wright was called to the pastorate of this small group of baptized believers. Their first place of worship was located at 407 E. Federal Street. They held worship service in a little frame building at 514 Griffith Street. The Rev. Wright, served faithfully until his death. He was succeeded by the Rev. M. J. Pollard, who guided the flock until he answered the Savior's call in 1912.
On April 14th, 1912 the Tabernacle Baptist Church was richly blessed as the Rev. Samuel P. Phillips accepted a call to become the spiritual leader. Rev. Phillips served as pastor for forty five years. Under his guidance and leadership two churches, including our present edifice, were built and the mortgage liquidated. The pastors who followed the strong leadership of Rev. S. P. Phillips included Rev. Henry J. Pippins, Rev. N. G. Harris, Rev. Herman Ford, Rev. Edgar Fisher, Rev. Gary Martin, Rev. R. LaMont Smith and our current pastor Rev. Kelvin E. Turner.
In 1986, the congregation, under the leadership of Rev. Edgar Fisher, broke ground for its most extensive improvement. This half million dollar building addition resulted in a first class educational wing and the S.P. Phillips Fellowship Hall.
On December 10th, 2000, the church celebrated "Independence Day" by paying off the debt owed on the first administrative and educational wing. Pastor Turner and the congregation continue the mission of Christ through its diverse ministry offerings. Ministries
