Autism Mini-Workshop Presentation Held on August 26, 2010
TITLE: Low Incidence Disabiltiies: Focus on Autism Spectrum Disorder and Assistive Technology
Wendy Szakacs and Jim Earnhart from the Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence (OCALI)
This presentation will introduce participants to information about low incidence disabilities, focusing on Autism Spectrum Disorders and assistive technology. Participants will gain knowledge of characteristics/differences specific to individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). An overview of communication and social differences, restricted interests and repetitive behaviors, sensory, cognitive, motor and emotional differences, as well as medical and biological factors associated with ASD will be provided. The presentation will also include examples of challenges faced by individuals with ASD within various environments and the supports needed to ensure success. The presentation will conclude with an overview of assistive technology and visual examples of its application with students and adults with low incidence disabilities, including ASD.
