Rev. Jim Smucker, November 7 - November 21
Mr. Garnett Shockey, November 28 - December 12

One of the most important books of the Bible, and indeed, of the whole world of literature is the collection known as
the "Psalter." It has been called a "treasury of prayer, praise,, & adoration, a Bible in miniature."
Its 150 songs [the word "psalm" derived from a Greek word meaning "song, accompanied by a string instrument"]
were composed over 500 years of Israel's life, were used in worship by Jesus and the Early Church, and have
played a key role in the spiritual life of all major branches of Christendom. John Calvin once called the book
"the mirror of the soul," for in its poems of faith, despair, hope, anger, joy, grief, and thanksgiving we have
a multi-faceted reflection of human experience in response to the Divine.

In these six sessions we shall study the origins, growth, and authorship, and importance of the Book of Psalms
through the hostory of Christianity. Then, turning attention to the major types, we shall consider the message
found in storytelling psalms, laments, songs of thanksgiving, festival songs and liturgies, and hymns of praise.
In that these poems spring from actual encounter with the living God, so may their study lead
anew to such experiences!
