Arlington is steeped in history through the Abner Johnson family. Having served under General George Washington during the War of Independence, Abner Johnson was rewarded with land located in the Cincinnati area. Beginning in 1804, his sons settled the land, built upon it and from that point forward, the land served as the family farm. Following the death of Abners grandson, the land changed hands and ultimately became, in 1934, what is today known as Arlington Memorial Gardens. Encompassing 165 acres, the original Johnson land is divided into 29 uniquely beautiful and serene gardens featuring sculpted memorials by renowned artists Zappia and Buttini. Arlingtons Board of Trustees appoints a group of officers who, on a day-to-day basis, manage the cemetery as a not-for-profit Ohio corporation.
