A Service Based Business With An Interesting History
In August 2007, Schulhoff Tool Rental, Inc. celebrated its seventy-second anniversary. Over seventy years of service and personal dedication to the needs of our customers. During the seventy plus years, Schulhoff's has undergone many changes and survived some interesting times. We thought you might enjoy knowing how a small (one man) electrical repair shop progressed to a hardware store and evolved into a successful tool renting operation, employing over twenty five people.
With faith in God, a dream and the grand sum of thirty-five dollars in his pocket young Mr. George E. Schulhoff started a small electrical repair business, August 05, 1935. Located in the rear of a building at 2812 Woodburn Avenue, Mr. Schulhoff started his tiny business in a tiny room (10’X12’). The room may have been small but his ideas were growing and so one year later in August 1935 Mr. Schulhoff moved his shop to its present location at 2709 Woodburn.
During the thirties and forties, the business gradually shifted from an electrical repair shop to a general hardware store. But in the fifties, armed with a new idea, Mr. Schulhoff gradually replaced hardware with tools that you could rent. His customer?s requests indicated which tools were most needed. Prompt, cheerful customer service was the key to his success. The tool rental business became a reality.
Some of the milestones from the 60’s include:
1962 – Purchased warehouse located at 2711 Woodburn
1963 – First drive-in tool rental (entered warehouse through a large garage door).
1960-1970 – The small tool rental line expanded to include large equipment
In 1973 the western look was introduced and the tool rental corral was born. Mr. Schulhoff installed cedar siding on all the exterior walls. Gas lights were added along with perimeter of the building photographs brought the concept to life creating a realistic western style. The highlight of the whole design is the addition of a western town built inside the warehouse which includes a general store, the Church of the Holy Spirit, the Sheriff’s Office, and the Red Dog Saloon (lunch 5 cents!!).
With growth came the need for more expansions:
1970 – Job site delivery begins and delivery trucks became a necessity.
1976 – Purchased building on the south side of the present entrance gate.
1976 – Purchased last parcel of zoned business property on Burdett Avenue.
Another significant change happened in 1986, the new two story building (50’ X 75’) housing our show-room, service area and business offices were completed. The new building was opened to the public on our fifty-first anniversary, August 05, 1986.
1986 – Purchased lot on Burdett Avenue to use for employee parking.
1988 – Installed computer system.
1989 – Purchased and tore down three houses next to parking lot to expand parking.
1990 – Erected new warehouse and completed employee parking lot.
