The Northside church of Christ is patterned after the church Jesus promised to build in Matt. 16:18 and this was done on the first Pentecost after the resurrection and ascension of Christ in Acts 2. The Apostle Peter, who was promised the keys to the kingdom of heaven, (Matt. 16:19 – keys represent authority to bind and loose conditions of salvation) used these keys when he preached the first Gospel sermon and opened the door of salvation to all who believed and obeyed. (Acts 2:1-39) Those who obeyed were added to the church and/or translated into the Kingdom. (Acts 2:41.47; Col. 1:12-14)
The church was known as the church of Christ (Rom. 16:16) because Christ purchased it with his own blood and it belongs to him. (Acts 20:28) The church of Christ in the New Testament met on the first day of each week to worship God in partaking of the Lord’s Supper, giving as God had prospered them, they prayed, sang praises to God and heard Gospel preaching. (1 Cor. 11:23-28; Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 16:2; 2 Cor. 9:7; Acts 2:42; Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16). The church was organized with elders and deacons (1 Tim. 3:1-13; Tit. 1:5-9) and their work was to help needy saints, support Gospel preachers and build up the church through teaching. (Eph. 4:12) Christ is head of the church and has all authority. (Eph. 1:22-23; 5:23) The church has no creed but Christ and his authoritative Word, the New Testament. We “speak as the oracles of God” (1 Pet. 4:ll) and all we preach and practice is by his authority. (Col. 3:17)
