After 47 years of providing costumes for everything from birthday parties to theatrical productions, Scott Costume officially closed its doors at the beginning of 2009.
"This was a difficult decision to make," said Tim Maloney, President of Canton Chair Rental, which bought the company when original owner Ward Scott retired in 2003. "Our core business of renting event supplies is strong and healthy. Unfortunately, as we have seen with the recent closing of the Carousel Dinner Theater, the entertainment industry took a huge financial hit in 2008, and the outlook is dismal through 2009."
Maloney explained that the bulk of Scott's income came from the inventory of theatrical costumes. Most went to high school productions, with occasional rentals to college, community or professional theater groups. "The problem is that maintaining an inventory of 40,000 costumes for shows ranging from "The Sound of Music" to "The King and I" has become prohibitively expensive during a time when Scott's rental numbers have taken a downturn."
While Scott's closing will result in the liquidation of the costume inventory, Maloney is considering keeping a limited amount of inventory at Canton Chair Rental. "Scott's has customers who have already placed orders for masquerade costumes, and we intend to honor those orders through Canton Chair Rental," he said. "We are also considering keeping the stock of Holiday costumes, such as Santas and Easter Bunnies, and possibly a limited line of Children's theme and Animal costumes. It depends on how the numbers work out."
Maloney also said that Theater groups needing costume plots should contact the National Costumers Association.
Scott Costume was established in 1961 by Ward Scott. Upon his retirement in 2003, his inventory was bought out by Maloney and moved to the Canton Chair Rental facilities on Southway Street SW. Canton Chair Rental was established when Maloney and his father, Bob, purchased the party rental inventory of Canton Chair and Table Company in 1985.
