Water the mums regularly. Soak the mums until water runs out through the holes in the bottom of the pot. After the initial soaking, water daily or until soil is moist. Don't allow the potted soil to dry out, as this will harm the plant. If you are planting them in the ground, make sure that the area is well drained.
Keep mums in natural light or in the direct sun, whether indoors or out. Mum plants need plenty of sun for proper growth. Keep them away from night lighting, as this disturbs their flowering cycle.

Deadhead spent blooms. After flowers begin to wilt and die, pluck them from the plant at the base of the flower. Leave on any buds, blooming flowers and leaves.

Most Fall Mums are a tender perennial in our zone 5, however, if you’d like to try wintering over this fall beauty here are some tips.

Potted mums should be planted in the ground as soon as they finish blooming. Snip off the dead blossoms. Do Not cut back at this time! Mound dried leaves or garden refuse around the plants to prevent premature freezing.

Prune the mum plants in the early spring before new growth begins. Cut out all dead stems.

Keep them well watered throughout the spring, fertilizing once a week for the first couple months and then ceasing fertilization once blooms are present.

Let them grow in the early spring and when they reach 12-18 inches tall, cut them back by half so they are only 6-9 inches tall. This will force the plant to bush out and produce more shoots. (More shoots equals more flowers.) Do not to cut mums back after July 15th. Water when needed in dry spells.
