160 Judicial Posts Decided Tuesday
In Tuesdays general election, Ohio voters selected Justice Maureen OConnor to become the first woman Chief Justice in the 207-year history of the state. Her term will begin on Jan. 1, 2011. Unofficial results also indicate that of the 160 judicial posts on the ballot, 48 seats were contested. Out of that total, six incumbents were defeated.

At the recent annual fall conference for court management professionals, the Ohio Association for Court Administration (OACA) presented the inaugural Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer Memorial Scholarship Award to Court Administrator Michael Kochera.

In Fiscal Year 2010, the Clients Security Fund of Ohio awarded more than $900,000 for 145 claims of attorney theft.

More than 900 Applicants Pass July 2010 Ohio Bar Exam
The Supreme Court of Ohio Office of Bar Admissions released the results today of the July 2010 Ohio Bar Exam, which was administered in Columbus July 27 through July 29.

The Court ordered appellants in two cases, who had previously filed notices of pending motions to certify a conflict, to show cause within 14 days why the Court should not proceed to consider the jurisdictional memoranda filed in the cases.

The Court referred 11 cases to mediation and returned nine cases to the regular docket from mediation.

The Court terminated the probation of attorney Phillip P. Taylor and reinstated to the practice of law attorney Ronald E. Wilhelm.

In State v. Cornwell, the Court issued several orders to facilitate the timely consideration of any matters relating to the execution of appellants sentence on Nov. 16.

The Court dismissed a writ of mandamus involving an expedited election matter in State ex rel. Owens v. Ohio Elections Comm.

The Court denied a motion for leave to file a motion for reconsideration by vexatious litigator Prasad Bikkani.

The Court issued 10 merit decisions without opinions, 10 motion and procedural rulings, agreed to hear six cases, declined to hear 66 cases, denied motions to reconsider seven cases, and agreed to reconsider one case.

Supreme Court Orders New Trial In Springfield Death Penalty Case
The Supreme Court of Ohio today unanimously vacated the aggravated murder conviction and death sentence of Jason Dean of Springfield and ordered that he receive a new trial.
