In between professional carpet cleaning, you can do a few simple things to keep your carpet looking good, longer. Having walk off mats, vacuuming and prompt spot removal are the keys to keeping your carpet looking good and being healthy.
The soil that is brought into your house and onto your carpet is mainly from shoes. One thing that you can do is have walk off mats at your main entrance and have people wipe their shoes off as they enter your home. If you do this, you will dramatically lower the soil that is brought in. Of course, you also could insist that they take their shoes off and lower it even more!
Another thing that you can do, and probably the most important, is vacuuming your carpet regularly. In the average home, the traffic areas should be vacuumed between two and three times a week. This will insure that you are getting the majority of the sand and soil out of your carpeting, thus reducing the wear that occurs over time. Having a vacuum that runs properly, and has the bags changed regularly is very important. Regularly vacuuming will not only reduce the soil and potential for wear, but it will improve the indoor air quality of your home, making for a healthier environment.
Vacuuming should be #1 on your list however; sometimes vacuuming alone just does not do the job on the little spots that magically appear on your carpet over time. Proper spot removal is very important, and using the right product and procedure can make the difference between making the spot permanent or removing the spot completely. In most cases, I have found that people will use the nearest thing to them to spot their carpet when a spill occurs. Applying a grocery store product, or a chemical that is not intended for carpet spotting may cause more harm than good. Having the right spotting agents and knowing what to do with them, will keep you from making a bad situation worse. A professional cleaning service should provide you with safe and effective spotting products, and procedures.
