What is LASIK?
Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is a laser eye surgery procedure designed to reduce patients' dependency on glasses and contact lenses . LASIK surgery is performed on nearly 1 million patients each year and is becoming increasingly popular, this FDA-approved laser eye surgery procedure corrects refractive errors, such as myopia, (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism by permanently changing the shape of the cornea, the eye's thin, clear covering.

During LASIK surgery, a tiny incision is made in the surface of the cornea and folded back into a flap, exposing the cornea's midsection, the stroma. Next, an excimer laser is used to carefully vaporize a thin layer of the stroma. Finally, the flap is closed and left to heal - no sutures or bandages are necessary. How long before LASIK surgery will I need to stop wearing my contact lenses?
To ensure accuracy and maximum results, you should stop wearing soft contact lenses at least three days before your examination at our office and three days before your LASIK surgery. You should stop wearing gas permeable lenses at least three weeks before your examination and surgery.

How long will I be out of work after LASIK laser eye surgery?
How much work you will miss depends on your occupation. Most people can return to work the day after LASIK surgery if they have experienced no complications or side effects; however, patients with a job that require perfect vision - such as airline pilots - may need to take an extra day or two to recuperate.

Does LASIK surgery hurt?
No. Prior to surgery, your eye will be numbed with eye drops, although you will be awake throughout the entire procedure. A small percentage of our patients experience gritty, watery, and scratchy eyes for a brief period after LASIK surgery, but these side effects tend to subside quickly.

What if I move my eye during the LASIK procedure?
Dr. Fladen will carefully observe and track fine eye movements through a microscope during the surgery. If you move your eye significantly, he will remove his foot from the foot pedal that activates the laser. The LASIK technology at our office has built-in safeguards that allow us to start and stop laser eye surgery as necessary.

How long does LASIK laser eye surgery take?
You will be in Dr. Fladen's office for approximately 90 minutes; the entire LASIK surgery will take about 15 to 20 minutes, with about one minute spent correcting each eye.

Can I drive immediately after LASIK surgery?
Because your vision will be blurred for a few hours after the procedure, we will ask you to have someone pick you up from our office after your laser eye surgery. You should plan to not drive for at least 24 hours.

Will I be able to see up close after LASIK surgery?
If you are under age 40, you will most likely not experience problems seeing close up after LASIK surgery. However, some patients over age 40 have difficulty reading fine print and require reading glasses. Called presbyopia, this problem will develop whether or not you have LASIK; it is not linked to laser eye surgery.

How much does LASIK surgery cost?
